The Experience Music Project was the brainchild of one of the original Microsoft managers/employees pictured below.
The bulk of the $50+ initial funding was donated from him as well. He had a love of music, and in particular, 60's Rock N Roll.
The EMP building was to be different, not at all conventional, and the photographs prove the success on that goal.
The Monorail train rides through the center of the structure, adding to the abstract impressions, both inside and out.
The inside of the structure was more breathtaking, however few photos were allowed. Laura is standing in front of a 50 foot high sculpture made up entirely of old guitars. Otto is seated at the bar of the Liquid Lounge, whose decor looked exactly like the interior of an accoustic guitar. And imagine being in the main lobby area called the "Sky Church" watching a 60 foot high LED display, showing period photos and flowing abstract images in color, while listening to a thunderous and moving version of the Airplane's "White Rabbit" in incredible surround sound! Besides the many interactive musical instrument laboratories, and the Jimi Hendrix memorabilia exhibit, the rest of the operation is equally overpowering . This is a must see!! |
