Otto was stationed at Fort Lewis in late 1970. At the time, it was one of the major training centers, specifically aimed at providing troops for Vietnam. During the conflict, over 306,000 troopers were provided from these facilities.
The old North Fort barracks complex was mostly cordoned off due to a HAZMAT problem, asbestos. Funny how this was discovered well after the usefulness of the camp diminished.
The museum on base has preserved the "look" of those building so that we could reminisce. How I miss those wonderfully decorated buildings and in particular the "BUTT CANS". A great decorator accent...
